Music Department

The Hidden River Middle School Music Department welcomes you to the 2015-2016 school year.  We are proud to offer a number of music activities that students can participate in throughout the year.  We have three levels of band instruction, one orchestra, and three world drumming classes.  The varied music curriculum is designed to highlight the musical abilities and interests of all of our students.  Please know that you are always welcome in the classroom and we look forward to sharing all of the students' successes with you!

Concerts, both daytime and evening, are our students' way of sharing what they've learned and showing how far they've progressed.  Please plan to attend your child's concerts, as they take pride in their accomplishments.

Beginning Band

Beginning Band is for any 6th, 7th or 8th grader who wants to learn to play a band instrument such as flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone or percussion.  Some students may want to join beginning band if they just want to refresh their skills from years past and feel that learning and/or reviewing  the basics would be helpful to them.  Others are actually beginners and this class is designed for students who have never played a band instrument.  At least one concert will be given per sememster.

Varsity Band (Intermediate)

Varsity Band is for 6th, 7th or 8th grade students who have had at least one year of instruction on a band instrument.  Students must be able to read and recognize notes in music and on their instrument.  Two to three concerts are given per year.

Concert Band (Advanced)

Concert Band is for the most experienced band students at Hidden River.  Students with two or more years of instruction will play in the Concert Band.  Occasionally students with just one year of experience will play in the Concert Band.  This band is for 7th and 8th graders.  Several concerts are given throughout the year.

Orchestra is for students who have experience playing the violin, viola, cello or bass.  There is no beginning orchestra, so these students must be comfortable reading music and have a skill level that demonstrates their expertise with the basic skills.  Several concerts are given throughout the year.

Jazz Band

The Hidden River Jazz Band is a group that students audition for.  Students learn the style of jazz in a jazz ensemble format.  They give several concerts throughout the year, including "gigs" throughout the community.  Also, they participate in a jazz festival, and workshops.  Joe Morrissey is the director.

World Drumming

We are fortunate to offer three world drumming classes at Hidden River.  Our world drumming ensembles learn music of South America, America and West Africa.  Each group meets for one semester and one concert per semester is given.

Current Information: Use this part to keep informed and updated on events and documents for the Hidden River Bands, Orchestra and World Drumming classes.

We are now raising funds in the annual Hidden River Play-A-Thon.  Please see the attached documents for information about the Play-A-Thon, and the Sponsor Sheet.  Feel Free to copy as needed!

Here is the concert schedule for the year.  Please know which group your child is in, and plan accordingly for our upcoming performances.
