Kristy Rolig
Hello!
I am Kristy Rolig, art teacher at Hidden River Middle School. I have been teaching for 21 years. Most of them have been in St. Paul, but some have been as far away as China and Malawi! When I am not teaching I am busy making art, thrifting, traveling, and spending time with my husband, kids and our dog.
I practice a pedagogy called Teaching for Artistic Behavior. I believe the student is the artist and the classroom is their studio! Instead of everyone working on the same art project, each student chooses their own meaningful work from a variety of media. We are working on engaging the Studio Habits of Mind. These include:
- Develop Craft (Technique & Studio Practice)
- Engage & Persist (Finding Passion & Sticking with It)
- Envision (Imagining & Planning)
- Express (Finding & Showing Meaning)
- Observe (Looking Closely)
- Reflect (Question & Explain and Evaluate)
- Stretch & Explore (Play, Use Mistakes & Discover)
- Understand Art Worlds (Domain & Communities)
As an educator I strive to bring Respect, Dignity and Mutual Concern to the classroom by using Restorative Practices to build community.
I look forward to working with your young artists!
In partnership,
Kristy Rolig
